Someone asked on a forum:

What book or movie affected your spiritual journey the most?

I’m sure I’ve read hundreds of channeled and esoteric books since I was a questioning teenager, when I discovered one of Ruth Montgomery’s early books on reincarnation. She started writing in the 1960s, predating Dolores Cannon by a couple of decades.

Then Dr. Raymond Moody’s books on near death experiences (e.g. Life after Life) sealed the deal for me regarding the existence of a life after death. He was a scientifically-minded doctor who had to be convinced himself by the otherwise inexplicable patterns he saw in patients’ NDE stories.

Once one accepts the reality of channeling, there is a plethora of information available.

But I want to make a distinction between metaphysical understanding and the spiritual journey. Sure, they influence each other. Opening my mind to the reality of, first, some kind of life after death, then reincarnation, pre-life planning and karma, channeling and spirit guides etc., was just a first step for someone like me with the kind of mind that wanted to KNOW things.

But spirituality is more than that, and doesn’t depend on that kind of knowing what lies beyond this physical world.

  • How do you live in your body?
  • What choices do you make, and how?
  • Are you kind to other beings, or do you act out of your own pain?
  • Are you open to growing and healing?
  • How do you see your role in the world?
  • What are your essential qualities that make you YOU, even if you don’t know/remember where you came from or what happens when you die?
  • Do you accept the challenges that come your way, or do you rail against them, shutting yourself down to the deeper experiences being offered?
  • Can you love yourself through it all?

These questions have everything to do with spirituality, i.e. living through one’s spirit, but addressing them does not require any particular knowledge or belief system.

So with that in mind, the one book that I love the most and would gift to just about anyone, is Emmanuel’s Book: A Manual for Living Comfortably in the Cosmos, channeled by Pat Rodegast and first published in 1987.  (Link to book on Amazon)

It’s poetic, non-dogmatic, loving, and doesn’t get bogged down in details. I gave it to my husband when we first met. I read it to my 9-year-old when his beloved grandfather died.

It’s still #1 to me.
